<Rick-Chat Host> Becky thanks ever so much for
joining us!
> My son Adam wants to sit in tonight. I guess we
can never start them out too young.
[Tue Apr 11 19:01:01 CDT 2006] Seth
<Rick-Chat Host> Hey Seth!
[Tue Apr 11 19:01:18 CDT 2006] Becky B.
<Seth> Hi Rick.
[Tue Apr 11 19:01:53 CDT 2006] Nellie Kennedy
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, I've been listening you your CD Little Bird a lot this week...it is really terrific!
<Becky B.> Thanks!
> Thanks for joining us tonight Nellie!
<Rick-Chat Host> Hi Nellie!
<Becky B.> Hey, everybody!
<Nellie Kennedy> My first time in a chat. Wanted to say hi to Rick and you. Becky - I also really enjoyed Little Bird. It is full of great songs.
<Becky B.> Thanks, Nellie! Was there any song you particularly like?
[Tue Apr 11 19:05:09 CDT 2006] Joe
[Tue Apr 11 19:05:09 CDT 2006] Mike Robinson
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, what other songwriters inspire you with your writing?Hi Joe!
<Becky B.> Ooo! There are so many...
<Joe> Hi everyone
<Becky B.> Gillian Welch
<Becky B.> Darrell Scott
> I haven't had a chance to hear you new CD but I'm looking forward to it. I love the lyrics on the tune you co-wrote with Carl Jackson about the three girls in the Normal Rockwell Scene.
<Nellie Kennedy> Really I liked all of them. One of my favorites is Iris.
<Rick-Chat Host> Welcome Mike!
<Mike Robinson> Hey Yall
<Becky B.> Cool! Val and I just worked up double fiddles on "Iris" for our shows.
<Becky B.> Getting to write with Carl was amazing. Saying he's good at what he does is the understatement of the century.
<Becky B.> Hey, Mike and Joe!
<Nellie Kennedy> Where did you get the idea for the song. My favorite line is "so I left that poor dirt farmer, alone in his half turned field"
<Mike Robinson> Candi, its great to hear you are doing so well, looking forward to seeing you soon. - Mike
> He's such a nice man I'm sure it was a lot of fun writing with him!
> Thanks a lot Mike!!!
<Joe> Becky, could you let us know how you go about writing songs?
<Becky B.> Well, are my favorite flowers.
<Joe> Tune first, lyrics later?
<Joe> both at the same time?
<Becky B.> And I'd broken up with a farm boy not too long before that
<Becky B.> You know, everything in a songwriter's life is material.
<Becky B.> How I got about writing songs...
<Becky B.> I usually get a line idea...just a little bit of something.
<Becky B.> I try to put it to music pretty quickly after
that because then I have a rhythmic framework to
hang the words on.
<Nellie Kennedy> How long does it take to write a
song. Minutes - hours - days???
<Becky B.> Oh gosh
<Becky B.> Minutes to days to months to years
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky , do you usually come up with melody ideas on the fiddle?
<Mike Robinson> What was the inspiration for Rest my weary feet
<Becky B.> It just depends.
<Becky B.> Sometimes you have to live with a song for a while before it's completely done...
<Becky B.> Minutes, days, months...even years!
<Becky B.> hahahaha
[Tue Apr 11 19:11:20 CDT 2006] Richard Guilbault
<Becky B.> My melody ideas usually come to me while I'm driving and singing to myself...
<Becky B.> ...or when I worked at the gas station back in college and was stocking the cooler and singing to myself...
<Becky B.> ...or when I'm walking and singing to myself...
<Becky B.> Hmm...I sing to myself a lot.
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, do you prefer writing alone or with another writer...or both?
<Becky B.> Don't tell anybody...they'll probably put me in the crazy house.
<Rick-Chat Host> Hi Richard..glad you could join us!
<Becky B.> I don't like to write with my guitar in my hands usually because I'm so limited when it comes to chords and such.
<Mike Robinson> Hey that girl is crazy, she's always singing to herself-- or maybe she is just a great songwriter....
<Becky B.> I find that when I write while strumming the guitar that I usually revert to melodies that all sound like something I've heard somewhere else or
already written.
<Becky B.> So I like to write the song first, then figure out how to accompany it and with what.
<Becky B.> Sorry, guys. I'm new at this chat stuff! I'll try to speed it up a bit.
<Becky B.> Rest My Weary Feet...
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, I really enjoy the diversity to your songs
[Tue Apr 11 19:14:48 CDT 2006] Lizzie
<Becky B.> Got that idea from the book Christy. Great book! Love it, love it!
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky you are doing just great!
<Rick-Chat Host> Hi Lizzie!
<Becky B.> Melodically and formulaicly...is that a word...Rest My Weary Feet was inspired by Gillian Welch's Red Clay Halo.
<Joe> Rest my Weary Feet lives in my small canon of mailman songs along with Who Will Watch the Homeplace
<Becky B.> Ooo! Great song! Is that a Kate Campbell tune? I don't own a copy of it, but have heard Laurie Lewis sing it live.
<Mike Robinson> How cool, I think of RC halo whenever I sing Rest my weary feet, I can see why now!
<Becky B.> Writing with others...
<Joe> I put them in the same category aside from the fact that they both have postmen in them
<Becky B.> Yes. I love writing with other folks because it gets my creative juices flowing and then I feel like I write better...or at least mroe...on my own
as well.
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, on your CD I really enjoy listening to Topaz Moon...what a great groove/feel!
<Becky B.> I'm honored! Thansk!
<Nellie Kennedy> You do well - esp the tragic song with Val about the child who fell from the upstairs door -- can't recall the name.....
<Mike Robinson> I want to write a bluegrass with the word formulaicly in it! Just kidding becky!
<Becky B.> Thanks! That's one of my personal favorites.
<Becky B.> You're welcome. :-)
<Becky B.> That's "On The South Dakota Wind." It's actually based on a true story from Val's husband Kraig's family.
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, you have had a lot of your songs covered by some great performers...how do you go about that?
<Becky B.> We found out later that the twin was actually an adult and was at a hotel when she tried to walk out on a balcony that wasn't there.
<Becky B.> Oh my. Grace abundant indeed.
<Becky B.> And some really nice people who believed in me and said, "You know, I know so and so and that song sounds like something they would
do..,.
<Becky B.> Mom, are you out there?
<Becky B.> She told me she was going to sign on as somebody else just to get my goat
<Becky B.> Baaaaaaa
<Mike Robinson> Becky, do you ever write a song specifically with someone in mind to pitch it to?
<Becky B.> Yes, I've done that twice now.
<Seth> How do you send your songs to other people, just you and your guitar ?
<Becky B.> However, neither has ended up with the party I wrote them for.
<Mike Robinson> Which ones, and for who or is it whom?
<Becky B.> Funny where a song ends up. They really do take on a life of their own!
<Becky B.> Well, one has never gone anywhere.
<Becky B.> The other is "Engineer."
<Becky B.> Which is on our band's latest record "That's What Love Can Do."....Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike, for those of you who might not know.
<Becky B.> I actually wrote "Engineer" as a kickin' chicken mow everybody down Bluegrass tune for Rhonda because she was looking for fast train
songs at the time.
<Becky B.> And then Val ended up doing it Grassabilly, which never even crossed my mind.
<Mike Robinson> Cool, know of anyone who is looking for a slow Christmas song?
<Becky B.> But I actually like it a whole lot better that way. We got an awesome groove on it...Pat McInery (sp?) guested on drums and Missy Raines
on bass. It was an awesome recording experience
<Becky B.> Hmmm...not at the moment. But folks seem to record those records in July so this would be the time to be pitching it.
<Mike Robinson> I am alway amazed that the energy you guys have on stage comes across on the recordings like you are in the front row!
<Becky B.> Seems like it's very hard to get a new Christmas song cut because folks mostly want to hear their favorite singers sing their favorite old
Christmas standards.
<Becky B.> Which is a bit frustrating because there are some great new Christmas songs out there!
<Mike Robinson> Yea I know, I sent it to Marty Raybon, I would like to hear hi do it.
<Becky B.> Thanks! We do have a good time.
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, you have written several very wonderful Gospel songs....I really have enjoyed the ones I've heard
<Becky B.> Thanks. Seems like I'm writing more and more of those lately, which is fine by me. :-)
<Mike Robinson> Me too!
<Becky B.> Maybe it's a case of "you are what you eat."
<Mike Robinson> un huh
<Becky B.> Hmm...if that were the case, I'd be a big bowl of hummus and pita bread
<Becky B.> Mmmm
<Rick-Chat Host> The one Doyle cut "Be Living" is a favorite of mine
<Becky B.> Thanks! They did a rockin' job on that.
<Mike Robinson> Becky how many songs have you written and how many have been recorded?
<Becky B.> I embarassed Jaime one time because I pointed out to somebody that he and I sing it in the same key.
<Becky B.> Ei-yi-yi...
<Becky B.> Um...
<Becky B.> I suppose I've written a few hundred.
<Becky B.> Maybe twenty or so have been cut...maybe a few more.
<Mike Robinson> a few hundred, yikes how long have you been writing them
<Becky B.> I've tried to keep up with that on my website. If ya'll have a chance, please stop by: http://www.beckybuller.com
<Lizzie> How do you go about getting someone like Doyle to listen to and record your songs?
<Becky B.> On the discography page, we've listed everybody who's cut one of my songs, a picture of the album and a link to their sites.
<Becky B.> My dear friend Carson Cooper, who was the banjo player and founding member of Appalachian Trail from the Bristol, VA., area, got that
song to Doyle.
<Rick-Chat Host> Also, 111rd Tyme Out did a great job on "Rest My Weary Feet" ...they sing Gospel so very well!
<Becky B.> Carson owns Cooper's Morrell Music in Marion, VA and Doyle gets a lot of his equipment there.
<Becky B.> Yes, indeedy they do! They've cut some of your stuff, haven't they, Rick?
<Rick-Chat Host> Yes..a couple on the "John and Mary "recording\
<Mike Robinson> Becky, are you doing a songwriting workshop or anything at Ossippee this summer?
<Becky B.> I think so...or at least helping judge the contest.
<Becky B.> Oh boy! Am I in trouble now for saying that? Will they have to behead me?
<Mike Robinson> I probably didn't make the finals anyway (dont know how to make the sad face)
<Mike Robinson> ;
<Becky B.> :-(
<Becky B.> hahaha
<Mike Robinson> thanks
<Becky B.> Now, they haven't said anything to be about semifinals or anything
<Becky B.> My hands are clean!
<Becky B.> :-)
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, how did you choose the songs to go on your CD..did you write any material specifically for the recording?
<Mike Robinson> That good. It will be great to have you guys there.
<Becky B.> When Val and J. Gregory over at Bell Buckle Records offered me the chance to do the record, I went back through the songs I had stashed
away and came up with a list of potentials
<Nellie Kennedy> You picked some great ones!
<Becky B.> Then Rick Adler, who produced the record, and I sat down to determine the final list. None of them were written with this particular record in
mind.
<Becky B.> Thanks!
<Becky B.> Some where brand new songs, like "Iris" and "Opal, Ruby and Pearl"
<Mike Robinson> listening to that right now!
<Becky B.> Some where older...I wrote "Topaz Moon" while in college over at East Tennessee State
[Tue Apr 11 19:42:52 CDT 2006] Cecil
<Becky B.> And some where plumb ancient...I wrote "You're My Guide" when I was 16.
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, are there any aspects of songwriting you struggle with at times?
<Becky B.> Hey, Cecil! Thanks for joining us.
<Rick-Chat Host> Welcome Cecil!
<Cecil> How Do Everbody
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, your doing a great job tonight...this is very informative!
<Mike Robinson> Hi Cecil
<Becky B.> Fine and dandy, thanks!
<Becky B.> Thanks, Rick!
<Becky B.> Aspects of writing that I struggle with...
<Becky B.> I get frustrated when I haven't written in a while.
<Rick-Chat Host> I know that feeling!
<Becky B.> I'm the kind of person who gets gung-ho about certain things and then forgets about other stuff until I have to come up for air for a minute, I
realize how much I've neglected.
<Becky B.> It's like scrambled eggs.
<Becky B.> I could eat scrambled eggs for a month and be perfectly happy.
<Cecil> Yeah like neglecting husbands, wives, kids, ...hey sounds like a song
<Becky B.> But then after a month, something inside me cries, "This is insane! You need variety!"
<Becky B.> So then I switch to cereal.
<Rick-Chat Host> Do you have a lot of song ideas you haven't really worked up yet?
<Becky B.> Hmm...that was a bit of a non-sequetor (sp?)
<Becky B.> But it's very hard to write when we're out on the road. I write best when I'm alone or maybe if I have a writing session with somebody
<Becky B.> Don't get me wrong...I love being around people!
<Becky B.> But then I usually don't get a whole lot of writing done.
<Mike Robinson> I was wondering if you could get any writing done while traveling
<Becky B.> And it's been hard to not freak out about my lack of song output during those times we're on tour.
<Becky B.> There's a season for everything, I guess.
[Tue Apr 11 19:49:05 CDT 2006] bunnyski
<Mike Robinson> Do you have ideas about songs while traveling?
<Nellie Kennedy> How many songs do you expect to write a year? Or do you bother to count?
<Mike Robinson> bunnyski, are you becky's mom"
[Tue Apr 11 19:50:12 CDT 2006] Becky B.
<Rick-Chat Host> I just remembered the great tune "Fishers Of Men" that Rhonda recorded....great number.! How did she come to record the song?
<Becky B.> I don't have any particular number in mind that I need to write in a year
<Rick-Chat Host> Welcome to the Chat Bunnyski!!!
<Becky B.> I'm just happy when I'm writing
<Becky B.> Well, I"m happy other times, tooo.
<Becky B.> I meant, I really enjoy writing and want to do it as much as I can.
<Becky B.> But I do like writing on inspiration rather than forcing something. When I force myself to write, I usually don't like what comes out
<Becky B.> A guy at Rounder was familiar with my songs and asked me to submit some things for Rhonda's consideration.
<Becky B.> And "wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles!" she wanted to record that one!
<Becky B.> She asked that I did some revisions first, though, which I was more than glad to do. I think they made the song a lot tighter.
<Lizzie> <Lizzie> You did a great job I love that song!
<Becky B.> thanks, Lizzie!
<Rick-Chat Host> Sure glad you sent her the tune... "Fisher's Of Men" is a very "moving" number!
<Becky B.> Something that's been a bit of a connundrum for me is that folks have been asking me for "Fishers of Men" sheet music to perform the
song at church.
<Becky B.> I did some voice leading things in college, but it's been so long ago and I don't have a lot of time right now to write the music out.
<Becky B.> So I've been trying to find someone to write it out for me.
<Becky B.> I think I've found a gal at my church who might do it.
<Becky B.> But I'm not used to requests like that, being mainly a Bluegrass writers.
<Mike Robinson> Yea were just a hum a few bars kinda group!
<Becky B.> I'm excited about the possibilty of writing choir music, and hope I have some oppurtunities to do so.
<Mike Robinson> not much into the "dots on fences"
> It's a great compliment!
<Becky B.> And I've been pleasantly surprised at the number of requests I've gotten from folks wanting to cover "Fishers of Men." Even my cousin's
high school vocal group up in Minnesota!
<Becky B.> :-)
<Mike Robinson> Any of the Gospel stuff you can get out to the general public, I say go for it!
<Rick-Chat Host> That's awesome!!!
<Cecil> At the risk of asking a previous discussed question, how do you avoid coping other melodies?
<Becky B.> Great question, Cecil! We haven't had that one yet.
<Cecil> Everythink I write sounds so "canned country"
<Becky B.> It's tough to not write something that sounds like something else...wouldn't agree, Rick?
<Becky B.> I mean, there's just so much music out there!
<Cecil> /zaclty
<Rick-Chat Host> You bet. We're all influenced by the music we've heard
<Becky B.> What sort of music dio you listen to, Cecil?
<Cecil> Bluegrass trad and way out, R&B and lately a lot of country blues.
<Becky B.> Cool
<Rick-Chat Host> It can be a challenge to create your own musical identity...Becky you surely have done that!
<Mike Robinson> i agree
<Becky B.> Oh gosh!
<Becky B.> I've just tried to write like the writers I like
<Cecil> I've used modulations and other things to avoid the canned country sound, but feel like I'm still not getting anything new.
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky, what styles of music do you listen to these days?
<Becky B.> Hmmm
<Becky B.> I especially like to listen to Dolly Parton's "Nine to Five" record in the morning.
<Mike Robinson> LOL
<Becky B.> Either that or Del McCoury's "Deeper Shade of Blue"
<Becky B.> Both make for fine "Get your butt out of bed" music
<Mike Robinson> What time is morning for you Becky?
<Becky B.> James Taylor, Darrell Scott, Nickel Creek
<Cecil> So your using the Socratic method Becky? or are you saying you listen closely to other recordings and just draft on their melodies?
<Becky B.> The People's Republic of Klezmerica
[Tue Apr 11 20:04:55 CDT 2006] Scott
<Becky B.> Mmmm....Socratic method
<Becky B.> Hey, Scott!
<Scott> Hi Becky
<Cecil> Answering with a question I mean....
<Becky B.> Oh yes
<Becky B.> Well, I think that's something I did more when I was first starting to write
<Rick-Chat Host> Just love Del's sound. Becky, do you remember "Trainwreck on Emotion?
<Becky B.> What record is that on?
<Becky B.> I don't think I have that one
<Rick-Chat Host> Sorry I just cannot spell!
<Becky B.> I have this thing with Del records...I love about every other one.
<Becky B.> Del and the Boys is my latest fav. There aren't enough songs about redheads in Bluegrass, you know!
<Rick-Chat Host> I think it was a few CD's back...but digs deep into your soul!
<Becky B.> And why is it that they're all women of ill repute?
<Becky B.> Hmmmm
<Scott> heheheh
<Becky B.> Girl at the Crossroads Bar
<Becky B.> Vincent Black Lightening
<Rick-Chat Host> Don't know how to respond to that?
<Becky B.> Aren't they're any wholesome songs about redheads in Bluegrass music?
<Becky B.> :-)
<Becky B.> Let's see...back to Cecil's question...
<Rick-Chat Host> Will have to write one!
<Cecil> Yes there are.... "Billy Bayou" from Roger Miller
<Mike Robinson> that ain't no parta bluegrass boy!
<Becky B.> Ooo! I haven;t heard that. But does that count? I mean, Roger Miller is a Country guy.
<Cecil> Lately I've been listeing to birds for melodies, but hey they're all mockingbirds here!!
<Scott> tweet
<Becky B.> The last week, Cecil, I've been all excited about trying to write Country so I"ve been listening to some Country to try to learn how to write it
<Becky B.> Judds, Eagles (hey, they're playing them on Country radio down here now...), Phil Vassar, Johnny Cash
<Becky B.> I need to get some more old Country recordings
<Becky B.> Skip Ewing stuff is great
<Cecil> well I wuz gonna ask which kind of country "Big and Rich" or..... Well if you can learn from others, Mac McAnally or of course Harley
<Becky B.> Ja, ja! Harley! Woo-hoo!
<Becky B.> Great stuff
<Becky B.> Yeah...not into the Big and Rich stuff so much
<Becky B.> But glad they're doing well
<Rick-Chat Host> I think every Harley song I ever heard just blew me away!
<Becky B.> Ha! My mom is Lizzie!
<Becky B.> Told you guys she was out ther!
<Becky B.> Hi, Mom!
<Becky B.> (I'm talking to her on the phone. Had to find out who she was.)
<Cecil> Some of Harley is soooo sappy, but you can't deny the hooks and imagery.
<Rick-Chat Host> Lizzie..hope you are enjoying the Chat session..we sure are!
> G
> Glad you joined us!
<Lizzie> Lizzie> You guys are doing a great job!
<Cecil> Well I for one expect a big hit after this. Who cares if it sounds like a country "Stock" song.
<Rick-Chat Host> We are usre lucky to have Becky as our guest tonight...Becky hope you are enjoying the experience!
<Becky B.> You know, a lot of the chord progressions out there on top 40 radio are the same
<Rick-Chat Host> sure...another typo..sorry!
<Becky B.> Drives me a little crazy!
<Becky B.> I
<Cecil> Well isn't there a "lowest common denominator" thing to reaching the masses?
<Becky B.> Having a great time, Rick! Thanks, you guys, for inviting me!
<Becky B.> They'd have us believe that, I guess
<Scott> Current music immitates current music....same ole blah, blah
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky do you have any advice...words of wisdom you'd like to impart on the other writers here
<Becky B.> As for my melodies, lyrics, etc....I usually just take a stab at it, get it to where I like it and hope somebody else does, too.
<Becky B.> But I think the important thing is to get the song to where you're happy with it and excited about it. After all, it's your child!
<Rick-Chat Host> Sound very logical...your approach surely has worked very well for you!
<Rick-Chat Host> sounds
<Cecil> Well you, Rick and a select few others sure seem to have a knack for great melodies and moving words.
<Rick-Chat Host> I agree..that it's important you feel good about the songs you write!
<Becky B.> And songwriting is something that needs to be practiced and crafted and honed just like learning an instrument or any other trade.
<Rick-Chat Host> Thanks Cecil! With me a lot of it comes form being inspired when I write..and to try to write with emotion and feeling.
<Becky B.> I encourage everybody not to get discrouaged if their songs aren't to their liking just yet. Keep at it!
<Rick-Chat Host> from..sorry!
[Tue Apr 11 20:20:22 CDT 2006] CecilwasKickedOFF
<Rick-Chat Host> Becky...do you ever actually give up on a song?
<Becky B.> Mmmm
<Rick-Chat Host> Sorry Cecil!
<Becky B.> Songs are built of Legos
<Becky B.> Or like Lego houses...let's go with that
<CecilwasKickedOFF> You callin me sorry Rick?
<Rick-Chat Host> Good analagy
<Becky B.> If you don't like what you built (wrote) you can tear it apart and write another one.
<Rick-Chat Host> Good point!
<Becky B.> Was just looking at an old song of mine the other day that is pretty muddled, but I copped a line of it I think I can use somewhere else
<Rick-Chat Host> Sort of like car parts
<Becky B.> "
<Becky B.> "I built is one piece at a time..."
<CecilwasKickedOFF> That's good news...possibly. I've got several notebooks of lines and ideas and rhymes of ideas etc. etc. so building blocks for
the future perhaps.
<Becky B.> Ja ja!
<CecilwasKickedOFF> Do you use much double entendre in your songs Becky?
<Rick-Chat Host> It's good to keep all those ideas/notes ..never know when you will need them!
<Mike Robinson> Great Chat, All, Mary is calling me to see the end of 10 Commandments - I am anxious to see how it all turns out! See you all soon.
> Thanks for joining us Mike!
<Becky B.> "night mike! Thanks for stopping by
<CecilwasKickedOFF> ttfn Mike
<Rick-Chat Host> Take care Mike!
<Rick-Chat Host> Any other topics..questions for Becky? we'll need to wind down the session shortly
<Becky B.> Double entendre....
<CecilwasKickedOFF> Sorry I came in late....I know, so many questions...hogging the mic
<Rick-Chat Host> This has been a gerat Chat...lots of interaction!
<Rick-Chat Host> gerat...great
<Becky B.> Guys...I'm a dud. What's double entendre again?
<CecilwasKickedOFF> Well there's plenty but one song compares a guy to a painting a "Still Life" and then uses the term to say he's gettin along best
he can...still life
<CecilwasKickedOFF> but it's "still life without you."
<CecilwasKickedOFF> of course she died. (sorry)
<Becky B.> Oh...right right right
<Becky B.> Hmmm
<Becky B.> Sometimes
<Becky B.> I'm trying to think of an example...
<Becky B.> Love stuff like that where there's an unexpected twist at the end...like the person you've been talking to in the whole song is actually dead
<CecilwasKickedOFF> Yeah right and it's like built in hook when the double meaning comes through.
<Becky B.> Ja ja
<Rick-Chat Host> We'll friends it's time to sign off. Becky thanks ever so much for being our guest tonight....it's been great!
> We really appreciate you being our April Guest Becky. Thanks a lot!
